Conference
In 2023, the 1st International Conference on Treatment Options for Non-Recyclable Plastic Waste will be organised in Bangkok by the Norwegian Research Foundation SINTEF under the regional project Ocean Plastic Turned into an Opportunity in Circular Economy (OPTOCE), funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad).
Up until 2015, approximately 6300 million tons of plastic waste had been generated worldwide. Only 9 percent has been recycled, 12 percent has been incinerated while the remaining 79 percent is accumulated in landfills, dumpsites and the environment. And the amounts are growing rapidly – every year another 300 million tons of plastic waste is generated, of which 13 million is estimated to reach our oceans – the majority is low-quality, single-use plastics. The world needs immediate solutions that are moving faster than the growth in the problem. For the first time, the International Conference on Treatment Options for Non-Recyclable Plastic Waste will be arranged in Bangkok, Thailand. It will be a unique arena for policy makers, industry, NGOs and academia to come together and share knowledge on how to tackle one of our most pressing challenges – the plastic waste that is polluting our oceans and environment.
